With Ray Emery and Brian Boucher signed in Philadelphia, the question now is, who will be the starter? Or better yet, how many games until Emery loses the starting job?
Emery is trying to reestablish himself in the NHL after playing in Russia last season. Boucher is trying to reestablish himself in Philadelphia, where he was hailed as the savior in net ten years ago before losing the starting job to Roman Cechmanek and being dealt to Phoenix.
Flyers goaltenders have averaged 1.5 years in Philadelphia in the last 15 seasons so I guess that’s not surprising for Emery and Boucher, who signed one and two-year deals, respectively.
Interestingly, Boucher spoke with ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun back in February about Philadelphia’s goaltending carousel in recent years:
“You just look at the track records and a lot of goalies have gone through there. Maybe they just haven’t, in their opinion, found the guy that they believe is their guy. I don’t know. They haven’t won, they haven’t had a championship team in a long time, so I guess they’re right.”
Well, now Boucher has the opportunity to show the Flyers that he’s “their guy.” But as LeBrun noted in regards to Martin Biron and Anterro Niitymaki in February:
There’s always the backup pushing in Philly, right? Just like Snow and Hextall, Boucher and Vanbiesbrouck, Cechmanek and Boucher, Esche and Cechmanek, Niittymaki and Esche …
Don’t expect that cycle to change next season.
